TDEC Recommends Sunset for TCIA (August 24, 2000) Speaking before the Agriculture and Natural Resources Joint Sub-Committee of the Tennessee State Legislature's Government Operations Committee on Wednesday, Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) Commissioner Milton Hamilton recommended that the Tennessee Commission of Indian Affairs (TCIA) be discontinued. The TCIA is attached for administrative purposes to TDEC, but the department does not direct TCIA policies. Hamilton told the sub-committee that TDEC is not the appropriate department for the TCIA's administrative attachment. He also cited dissension among the Native American community as a reason that the existence of the TCIA in it's present form should not be continued. Hamilton said he had consulted with TCIA acting chairman Clayton Prest on his recommendation. The sub-committee took no action on the matter. After hearing from 7 of the 8 members of the public who had signed up to address the sub-committee, four of whom expressed strong criticism of the TCIA and three of whom expressed strong support, Rep. Bill McAfee, the sub-committee chairman, advised the Native Americans present to resolve their differences before the sub-committee meets again in October, stating that otherwise a bill would undoubtedly be introduced in the next session of the legislature to discontinue the TCIA.
