Repair Work Scheduled To Begin
On Native American Burial Area at
Mousetail Landing State Park

Repair work is scheduled to begin this week (2/14/2000) on an eroding burial area at Mousetail Landing State Park.

Mousetail Landing State Park is located on the Tennessee River in Perry County, Tennessee. The park also happens to be the location of a prehistoric Indian town site. For years, the site has been eroding into the Tennessee River. The park has lost about 20 feet of river bank in this area in the last ten years. The erosion frequently exposes archaeological features and human burials. Looters (people looking for Indian artifacts) taking advantage of these conditions have also been a problem in the park for years.

Eroded River Bank at Mousetail Landing State Park

In 1999, through a cooperative effort between the State of Tennessee, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and local conservation groups, funding was allocated and plans drawn up to repair the river bank and prevent future erosion by placing rock, also known as rip-rap, along the river's edge in this area. This will also protect the burials from future disturbance by erosion and looting.

The Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma was consulted about the project in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. When negotiations over the terms of the project agreement between the Corps of Engineers and the state bogged down last year, a letter from Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby to Corps officials helped speed the process along. Chickasaw Nation representatives also inspected the site late last year.

UPDATE 2/26/2000

Larry Mullins, Park manager at Mousetail Landing Park, reports that the repair work on the bank was completed on Wednesday, February 23.
