House Committee To Consider Moccasin Bend National Park
By Toye Heape

(Nashville - 10-2-2001) On Wednesday, October 3, the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Resources will consider a bill sponsored by Congressman Zach Wamp that would create a National Park unit on parts of Moccasin Bend National Historic Landmark in Chattanooga.

Last week the House Subcommittee on National Parks, Recreation, and Public Lands amended the bill, H.R. 980, excluding from the park boundary approximately 13 acres of property currently occupied by a radio transmitting tower operated by radio station WDEF. The amendment also dropped a provision of Wamp's original proposal that would have included within the park unit a separate parcel of land on Moccasin Bend that includes a segment of the Trail of Tears.

The Committee on Resources hearing begins at 9:00 am (CST) on Wednesday. The proceedings can be heard live on the Internet by visiting the schedule page on the Committee's web site at http://resourcescommittee.house.gov/schedule.htm .
