Educational Assistance Programs

Most of the programs below are available to both Indians and non-Indians. Of those that are available only to Indians or minorities, some require membership in a federally recognized tribe, some do not. Most Bureau of Indian Affairs programs require the beneficiary to be a member of a federally recognized tribe.

So, if you're Indian but not enrolled, and a program's eligibility criteria require you to be Indian or a member of a minority but does not specify tribal membership as a requirement, contact the agency or organization that provides the assistance before you decide you're not eligible - you may be surprised.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga offers a $5,000 Trail of Tears Remembrance Scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded to a full time student who has a minimum GPA of 3.0 and who demonstrates financial need. Applicants must be of Native American descent and must provide evidence of enrollment in a Federal or State recognized tribe OR be able to verify 1/16 Native American heritage. The scholarships are funded by the Trail of Tears Remembrance and Motorcycle Ride and made available each year dependant on the proceeds of the event. For information contact:
