The U.S. Census Bureau figures for 2000 indicate the
total American Indian/Alakan Native population of Tennessee is 15,152. Of this
number, 13,820 individuals chose American Indian/Alaskan Native as their only
racial group. Apparently 1,332 individuals are American Indian/Alaskan Native
who classified themselves as Hispanic or Latino.
For the first time, the Census forms included a
classification for those of two or more races. In Tennessee the total
population of Individuals claiming American Indian/Alaskan Native and one
other race - either White, Black, Asian or other, not including Hispanic/Latino - totaled 20, 908. The population of individuals claiming American
Indian/Alaskan Native and two or more races, not including Hispanic or
Latino, totaled 1,852. The total population of individuals claiming
American Indian/Alaskan Native and one or more other races, not
including Hispanic/Latino, is 22,760
The combined total population of individuals classifying
themselves as American Indian/Alaskan Native and those who classify themselves
as American Indian/Alaskan Native and one or more other races, including those
American Indian/Alaskan Natives who classified themselves as Hispanic/Latino, is 38,940.
The total Hispanic/Latino population of Tennessee is
123,838. The population breakdown available on the Census Bureau Web site for
this group includes only non-Hispanic groups of one race - White, Black,
American Indian, Asian, Native Hawaiian, and "Some other race" - and
non-Hispanic individuals of two or more races. As we noted above, apparently 1,332 individuals are American Indian/Alaskan Native
who classified themselves as Hispanic/Latino. However, the total population
listed as "Some other race" is 56,036. The non-Hispanic portion of
this number is 4,780. This means that 51,256 individuals classified themselves
as Hispanic and "Some other race". There is no breakdown by specific
race of the "Some other race" group. Some of these may be
Indian. The total population listed as Hispanic and two or more races is
8,285. Some of these individuals may be Indian as well. We'll post this
information when the Census Bureau makes it available.
