Suggested Reading

Our Suggested Reading list contains books and magazines that we have read, enjoyed, or found informative and useful.

Those that are still in print can be ordered through our association with Amazon.com. Just click on the title or cover and you'll go to Amazon.com where you can make your purchase to the low Amazon.com price.

All the titles included here contain information, opinions, attitudes, etc. that we think the Indian community needs to be aware of. However, we want to point out that we don't necessarily endorse or agree with everything in some of these works.

For example, the Archaeology section contains selections that describe and illustrate the excavations of Native American graves. We believe it is wrong to disturb human burials, but this is something that has happened in the past and continues today. We believe Indian people should know about this and should have the opportunity to decide for themselves how much of this information they need to be exposed to - we note on each Archaeology title that it contains illustrations of human remains and/or burial objects.

We also want to note that some Indian nations have their own archaeology departments or hire archeologists as consultants - not to go out and dig up graves, but to prepare them for the many situations  they encounter that involve archaeology. It's in this spirit that we suggest these books to you.

We recommend this book because it contains good historical information on Dragging Canoe, a Native American hero who is overlooked in history. This is in spite of the title - we don't know what a "chieftainess" is. Nancy Ward was a Beloved Woman.
